MORGANTOWN – Morgantown has been named one of the top 20 safest cities in the state of West Virginia for 2018.
SafeWise Security, a home security company, has compiled a list based on 2016 FBI crime report statistics and population data to determine the safest cities in each state. The evaluation is based on the number of reported violent crimes in each city.
Ranking 16th in the report, Morgantown is the most populated city to make the list. According to the report, violent crimes make up just over 13 percent and property crimes come in at almost 87 percent. Both statistics are much lower figures than the overall state average crime rates.
“The dedication that the City Police Department has put forth to help make the city a safer place and a better community is really exemplified by this award, which is an honor to receive,” said Chief of Police Ed Preston.
After facing higher than average gun violence crimes and the rampant opioid crisis in recent years, community-based organizations, federal legislation and local police efforts have helped to combat these issues, among others.
