As cold weather approaches, and with it snowy and icy conditions, the Morgantown Code Enforcement Department has organized a volunteer program to provide service for snow removal from sidewalks and driveways of the homes of the disabled, elderly, or otherwise physically incapable citizens in the community.
The City of Morgantown has regulations for city residents and property owners to keep their sidewalks and driveways clear of snow and ice. City Code requires property owners to clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours of snowfall to ensure the safety of pedestrians in our community. The Code Enforcement Department started this assistance program 7 years ago to help citizens meet this requirement, and typically receives around 12 calls for assistance each year.
This year, volunteers for the program come from the WVU Center for Service and Learning’s iServe Program, the WVU Wrestling Team, and local church groups.
“It’s heartwarming to see so many people willing to help the community,” said Code Enforcement Director Mike Stone. “If we get a call from an elderly or disabled person needing help with removing snow from their sidewalk or driveway, we will make sure one of our volunteers will get out and take care of it.”
