Morgantown Fire Department To Host Open Houses For Potential New Hires

Morgantown, W.Va. – To attract potential new hires, the Morgantown Fire Department (MFD) will host two open houses in October. The events are designed to give prospective candidates an inside look at the department’s expectations and operations. 

The open houses will take place at the Northside Fire Station, located at 1000 Van Voorhis Rd., Morgantown, WV, 26505. The first event is set for Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a second open house on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, at 1 p.m.

Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in agility trials, engage in a question-and-answer session with members of the department, and take a tour of the facility. MFD personnel look forward to giving recruits and any other citizens interested in becoming firefighters the chance to experience the station firsthand. 

“We want to give people the ability to actually look at and sample any of the physical agility stations,” Fire Chief John Lemley said. “By offering these open houses before the actual agility test, we’ve increased the percentage of people passing the exam. It’s a great help.”

Agility stations will include stair climbing exercises with a weighted vest in addition to hose dragging, mannequin drills, and hammer striking. All of these activities are considered occupational requirements for firefighters. 

Future MFD events include:

- Oct. 5, 2024: Firefighter Open House at 10:30 a.m. at Northside Fire Station.
- Oct. 20, 2024: Firefighter Open House at 1:00 p.m. at Northside Fire Station.
- Nov. 2, 2024: Entry Level Firefighter Agility Exam at 9:00 a.m. at Northside Fire Station.
- Dec. 5, 2024: Entry Level Firefighter Written Exam at 6:00 p.m. at Defense in Depth.
