SkyWest Airlines, Operating as United Express, Selected as Next Essential Air Service Carrier

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has officially selected SkyWest Airlines, operating as United Express, to provide Essential Air Service (EAS) at Morgantown Municipal Airport (MGW) for the next three years. Services are slated to begin in December. 

The EAS is a federal government program that supports and guarantees air services in smaller communities. The DOT’s announcement confirms that MGW will soon have daily United Express jet service. There will be a total of 12 nonstop round trips per week consisting of five weekly round trips to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and seven weekly round trips to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).

According to MGW Director Jonathon Vrabel, this will be the first time the airport has had jet service, giving passengers the opportunity to fly on a 50-seat CRJ200 aircraft.

“This is an exciting addition to our air services,” Vrabel stated. “With our new carrier, we hope to enhance connectivity and provide our travelers with trips that are both comfortable, reliable, and convenient.”

Passengers will be able to connect to domestic and international flights on United’s global network at IAD and ORD. MGW believes these options will create more flexibility when it comes to making travel plans for both current and new air travelers as well.

Vrabel also mentioned that he looks forward to seeing an increase in airport usage in 2025.

“These new flights serve as a gateway to some of the most sought-after traveling experiences,” Vrabel explained. “There’s no need to drive all the way to Pittsburgh when you can start your journey closer to home, with a hassle-free experience, free parking, and shorter TSA security lines.”
