City of Morgantown Plans Open House Celebration for GIS Day

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The City of Morgantown will host an Open House in observance of GIS Day on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Morgantown City Hall.

The purpose of the Open House, which has been coordinated by the City of Morgantown’s Geospatial Services Division, is to celebrate the innovative applications of geographic information system (GIS) technology in analysis, visualization, data collection, and thought leadership in the field of municipal government.

Attendees of the GIS Day Open House will have the opportunity to enjoy a selection of interactive stations, including story maps, informative displays, and more. WV State GIS Coordinator, Taryn Moser, will also be in attendance to showcase her work.

The City of Morgantown’s Geospatial Services Division has had an active year,  including highlights of launching its GeoHub website, which is a one-stop shop for data and mapping from the Division, assisting in the rollout of the Cityworks platform for permitting and asset management, and providing assistance to the Ward and Boundary Commission in its biennial review of the City’s wards to ensure they remain statistically balanced. The Division provides support to every municipal department and continues to promote the use of geospatial technology in day-to-day operations.

"The City of Morgantown has been active in building its Geospatial Services Division and we are excited to share our developments with our GIS Day Open House,” said Marvin Davis, Geospatial Services Manager. “Since 2019, our geospatial operations have grown leaps and bounds. We look forward to sharing some great highlights of the work we do and show citizens how the technology helps move the City forward.”

Jack Dangermond, founder and president of Esri, originally established GIS Day in 1999 to encourage collaboration and share how GIS impacts everyone. Since then, the explosion of geospatial technology has expanded that idea into a global event that shows how geography and the real-world applications of GIS are making a difference in business, government and society. Thus, GIS Day is a chance for organizations to share their accomplishments and inspire others to discover and use GIS.

The City of Morgantown is among hundreds of organizations worldwide hosting gatherings that will celebrate the impactful work of GIS professionals, igniting the imagination of the future innovators who will further advance global progress using GIS.
