City of Morgantown Prepares for Winter Storm

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. —The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Morgantown, effective from 7 p.m. this evening to 7 p.m. January 6, 2025. Residents should prepare for heavy snowfall of up to 6 to 9 inches, along with strong winds and ice accumulations that may create hazardous conditions.

Damien Davis, acting city manager for the City of Morgantown, has announced that crews will be out today pre-salting the roads before the storm and will transition into plowing and salting as conditions change. The city is currently preparing to have at least three to four crews out this evening and throughout the night.

“Our priorities are main routes, steep slopes, and roads with large curves,” said Davis. “Once those are treated, we will move to our secondary roads."

City officials urge residents to stay indoors and limit travel unless necessary. If travel is unavoidable, please exercise extreme caution and allow extra time for your travel plans.

The City of Morgantown and Morgantown Municipal Airport personnel are trained and ready to respond to winter weather conditions. Snow removal crews will be deployed as needed to ensure roads remain safe and accessible as possible.

Residents are reminded to prepare their homes with adequate supplies, including food, water, medications, alternative sources of heat if available, flashlights, and batteries in case of power outages.

The city would also like to remind its residents that the warming shelter at Grace Shelter is open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Any citizens who interact with someone who is unsheltered may direct them to the local shelter located at 20 Scott Ave, Morgantown, WV 26508. As reported by shelter staff, beds are open and available.

For emergencies, residents are reminded to call 911. To report incidents of concern that may not rise to the level of an emergency, Monongalia County Centralized Command Center (MECCA) 911 offers a non-emergency line that is available 24/7 at 304-599-6382.
