Morgantown Fire Department Responds to Two Reported Fires
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Morgantown Fire Department (MFD) responded to two reported fires on the evening of Tuesday, February 18.
The first reported incident, which occurred at approximately 10:07 p.m., proved to be a "smoke scare" from a malfunctioning furnace. Company 3, led by Lt. Mitchell Beall, arrived on the scene within 4 minutes and entered the residence through the basement. There, the crew was able to locate and shut off utilities to the furnace.
Then, at approximately 11:22 p.m., Morgantown firefighters were dispatched to a confirmed structure fire on Richwood Ave. Crews arrived within 3 minutes, and under the direction of Lt. John Moore, Company 2 began an interior attack. The fire appeared to have started within an exterior wall next to the front door, and it was primarily contained within the room of origin.
Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from expanding into the basement and the apartment unit to the left. However, heavy fire generated extensive damage to the ceiling, which extended to the attic. The fire is currently under investigation by the Morgantown Fire Marshals.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries to his upper leg while working from a ladder. He was examined by EMS personnel on scene and refused transport to the hospital for further evaluation. There were no other reported injuries to MFD personnel.
