MPD Resumes Safe Streets Ahead of St. Patrick's Day Festivities

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The City of Morgantown is pleased to announce the return of the Morgantown Police Department’s (MPD) Safe Streets Initiative. As reported in December, Safe Streets was extended through the holiday season to increase public safety and law enforcement visibility in the downtown area. 

With the initiative resuming on March 1, 2025, Morgantown Chief of Police Eric Powell looks forward to seeing the same positive results the initiative has generated over the past eight months.

"With St. Patrick's Day and warmer weather coming our way, we want to remind everyone to be responsible while enjoying our wonderful downtown area and other locations in Morgantown," Chief Powell said. "We want people to act safely and feel secure no matter where they are visiting. Like always, we strive to serve and protect our citizens. Safe Streets ultimately enhances the services we provide."

Safe Streets, like before, will continue to provide foot patrols near trails, school access points, and downtown area businesses. The initiative has proven to deter and safeguard the community from drivers operating their motor vehicles while under the influence, disorderly conduct, possession, and other criminal violations.

"While folks might be enjoying green beer next week, we ask them to embrace a clear mind strategy or plan that utilizes designated drivers, responsible consumption, and making smart choices that protect everyone," Deputy Chief Chris Ruehmer added. "Green vibes and safe rides is our motto this St. Patrick's Day. Cheers to safety. Don't drink and drive."

MPD would like citizens to know that anyone can participate in the Safe Streets Initiative by actively reporting crime. 

"If you see it, report it," Chief Powell stated.
