City of Morgantown Declares Municipal Election Results


MORGANTOWN W.Va. - The City of Morgantown held its municipal election on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, with polls open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The canvassing process, a post-election method of confirming election results, took place, May 5, 2025. Canvassing results confirm that 1,924 ballots were cast in total, including absentee and provisional ballots. Morgantown City Council has declared the following election results.

Mark Downs has been elected as the representative for the Sixth Ward, receiving 1,050 votes. Stephanie Hunt received 753 votes.

Jodi Hollingshead and Jenny Selin secured their positions in the Second and Fourth Wards, respectively. Both candidates ran unopposed, with Hollingshead receiving 1,327 votes and Selin receiving 1,228.

In addition to the council elections, voters considered two ballot initiatives:

1. Voters rejected the first initiative, which proposed a charter amendment allowing the City Council to approve the city manager residing outside the city while employed. A majority cast a “no” vote, with 1,412 residents voting “no” and 429 voting “yes.”

2. For the second initiative regarding Ordinance No. 2024–29, which enacts a new Article 1157 of the City Code titled "Camping on Public Property," residents voted to not repeal the ordinance. A majority voted “no” to repeal, with 986 residents voting “no” and 905 voting “yes.”
