Morgantown Municipal Airport on Track for More than 10,000 Passengers in 2025

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown Municipal Airport (MGW) is poised to reach a notable threshold this year with more than 10,000 passengers expected to fly from MGW in 2025. With approximately 7,700 passengers flying through the airport last year, MGW is reaching new heights when it comes to meeting its goals.

According to MGW’s Airport Director Jonathan Vrabel, recent enhancements to flight offerings have resulted in the marked increase in enplanements. Vrabel credits this increase to the United Express flights, operated by SkyWest Airlines. For nearly six months now, United Express has been delivering daily flights to Dulles and Chicago, contributing to the airport’s growth.

With affordable airfare, free parking, shorter TSA lines, and an upgraded terminal, MGW continues to be a convenient choice for travelers.

“More than 4,300 passengers have flown out of MGW since the beginning of the year, compared to 2,222 enplaned passengers during the same period last year with Southern Airways,” said Vrabel. “This uptick in passenger numbers is encouraging, and if we can reach 10,000 enplanements by the end of the year, we will automatically qualify for $1 million in capital improvement funds from the FAA.”

One of the key advantages of flying from MGW with United Express is the availability of a 50-seat CRJ 200 aircraft, providing a more comfortable travel experience compared to smaller prop planes.

In addition to increasing enplanements, Vrabel and his team are actively pursuing funding for the airport's runway extension project. Recently, the City of Morgantown secured approximately $10 million in grant funding to support the initiative, which has a total estimated cost of $62 million. So far, four phases of the extension have been completed, with four to five additional phases remaining. Vrabel anticipates completion of the project by 2029 or 2030.

“Funding options will determine how quickly the project progresses,” said Vrabel. “The economic growth that will result from the completion of this project will be a game changer for our city, county, region, and state.”
