Morgantown Municipal Airport Receives $9.5 Million FAA Grant for Runway Extension Project
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The U.S. Department of Transportation, through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), has awarded $9,520,188 to Morgantown Municipal Airport (MGW) to support the next phase of its ongoing runway extension project.
The grant will support Phase 5 of the construction process and Phase 6 of the project’s design, which includes site preparation, grading, and the placement of approximately 450,000 cubic yards of rock embankment. This phase is a critical step in extending Runway 18/36 by 1,001 feet, enabling the airport to accommodate a broader mix of aircraft and enhance regional connectivity.
“This investment is a major milestone for MGW and the greater Morgantown area,” Airport Director Jonathon Vrabel said. “It brings us closer to completing a project that will expand our capabilities and support long-term economic growth. We are certainly thankful for the tremendous resources being invested to support our region and state.”
The funding was made possible in part thanks to the continued support of U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, who has championed infrastructure improvements across West Virginia.
“I was proud to help secure over $9 million dollars in funding to support Morgantown Municipal Airport’s runway extension project. This runway extension will allow for greater regional connectivity and boost economic development. I look forward to seeing how this project will benefit Morgantown, the surrounding communities, and our entire state in the years to come,” Senator Capito said.
The runway extension is expected to improve safety, increase operational efficiency, and attract new commercial and general aviation opportunities to the region.
Consideration of approval to accept the grant award will take place at the next City Council meeting on July 22, 2025.
