Two Students Charged with Malicious Burning Following Recent WVU vs. Pitt Football Game
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Morgantown Fire Marshal’s Office has cited two individuals in connection with fires set during and after the West Virginia University vs. University of Pittsburgh football game on Saturday, September 13, 2025.
One cited individual is a student at West Virginia University. The other individual who was cited, a Washington & Jefferson College student, used a flamethrower to ignite furniture. Three other individuals agreed to assist the affected property owner with cleanup in lieu of citations for their limited roles.
Each individual cited faces charges of malicious burning, a serious offense under city code, (1512.05). The charge carries fines ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 and may also require restitution to the City of Morgantown to cover the costs associated with extinguishing the fires.
These citations were the result of actions witnessed directly by Fire Marshals, as well as a thorough review of camera footage and social media. Evidence is still being investigated.
Captain Jason Quinn of the Morgantown Fire Marshal’s Office emphasized the importance of celebrating responsibly.
“We want our community to enjoy these games, our great City, and all it has to offer, but celebrations should never cross into lawlessness, chaos, and destruction," Quinn said. "Setting fires puts lives at risk and needlessly ties up public safety officials at a time when they are already working hard to protect the city and its residents.”
The Morgantown Fire Marshal’s Office would like to remind students, residents and visitors that reckless behavior not only endangers the community but also results in costly legal consequences.
