Winter Weather Advisory for Morgantown; City Crews Ready to Respond

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Morgantown beginning at 11 p.m. tonight and continuing through Tuesday afternoon. Residents should prepare for snow, possibly mixed with rain, transitioning to all snow after 5 a.m.

Damien Davis, Director of Engineering and Public Works, said city crews are prepared to address these adverse weather conditions by immediately salting and plowing as weather conditions progress.

“Main routes, steep slopes, and roads with large curves are our top priorities,” Davis said. “Once those are treated, we focus on secondary roads. We have two crews starting at midnight this evening and they will be ready to respond accordingly with more crews as weather develops.”

City officials urge residents to limit travel unless necessary. If travel is unavoidable, exercise extreme caution and allow extra time.

The Morgantown Municipal Airport is monitoring conditions and will deploy snow removal crews as needed as well. Passengers should check United.com for the latest flight information or view United Airlines' Travel Alerts page on their website at https://www.united.com/.../trip-planning/travel-alerts.html.

Residents are encouraged to prepare homes with food, water, medications, alternative heat sources, flashlights, and batteries in case of power outages. To report power outages, text OUT to 544487, call 888-544-4877, or visit firstenergycorp.com/outages. The Morgantown Public Safety Building at 300 Spruce Street will serve as a temporary warming location until the seasonal shelter operated by Catholic Charities opens later this month. The Public Safety Building is not currently operating as a full warming shelter; however, the city recognizes the importance of providing this facility as an alternative until the designated warming shelter becomes available.
