City of Morgantown to Sponsor Cinco de Mayo Celebration Downtown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - A Cinco de Mayo celebration on Saturday, May 6, from 12 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. will showcase Mexico’s colorful cultural tradition. The event, coordinated by the Morgantown Sister Cities Commission, will take place in the Wesley United Methodist Church annex.

“We are hosting a wonderful cultural program, and recognizing our sister city of Guanajuato, Mexico,” said Lola Contreras, a Sister Cities Commissioner and teacher of Spanish at Morgantown High School.

Spanish language students from Morgantown High School will perform canción mexicana. Dancers will include Asha Huzurbazar, Nicole Lin, Katherine Wang and Ashlee Cheng. The students will also stage a fashion show of traditional dresses of regions of Mexico.

“Our MHS students will perform wonderful dances to recognize Cinco de Mayo,” Contreras said. “Students worked hard in rehearsals after school, practicing traditional Mexican dances—and they will offer a fashion show on stage.”

In the afternoon, the duo of Lily and Sergio Caporali will play traditional Mexican music such as Sabor a mi and La Bikina. Well-known Mexican Dancer, Maria Paulina Medina, will perform popular traditional dances of Mexico.

Aside from performances, there is a Super Mercado offering a variety of handmade crafts and Mexican cuisine. Parking will be available across the street from Wesley United Methodist Church.

The Morgantown Sister Cities Commission has three vacancies. If interested, visit the City of Morgantown's website. For details, contact contreras.lola@gmail.com.
