WVDOH to Begin Curb Ramp Replacement Project in Morgantown
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) will begin a major curb ramp replacement project in the City of Morgantown in the upcoming weeks. This initiative will include the replacement of over 100 curb ramps throughout the city, with a significant number located in the downtown area. Overall work will begin outside of the downtown area next week and demolition and construction operations in the downtown area are scheduled to begin in mid-June.
WVDOH contractors will complete the work on the Don Knotts + 9 project that was awarded to SQP Construction Group for $1,070,307. This funding covers upgrades at nearly 175 locations on Don Knotts Blvd., Pleasant Street, Spruce Street, Willey Street, High Street, South High Street, Walnut Street, Beechurst Avenue, University Avenue, and College Avenue. The target completion date is early August. Improvements vary from minimal demo and replacement of truncated domes to full scale ramp removal and replacement.
The project's goal is to enhance accessibility and safety for pedestrians by upgrading existing curb ramps to meet current standards. This effort is part of WVDOH's ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Staff Engineer Drew Gatlin commented on the project, stating, "These upgrades will significantly enhance pedestrian accessibility and improve sidewalk conditions, making our city safer and more navigable for all residents."
In addition to the curb ramp replacements, the City of Morgantown continues to collaborate with WVDOH to address and patch state roads in poor condition. The city hopes to assist WVDOH with paving projects as well. Many of the main roads in the Morgantown area are owned by WVDOH, and this partnership is crucial in ensuring the roads remain safe and functional for all residents and visitors. "The city appreciates the State of West Virginia's leadership and commitment to this project," Gatlin added.
